Local Natives: World News

I wrote a review for this song which looks unlikely to ever see the light of day unless i publish it myself. So here it is...

Los Angeles quintet Local Natives pitched up in Britain in November 2009 having surfed the wave over in the wake of bands like Vampire Weekend and Fleet Foxes. There’s nothing original about their sound, but fourth single World News bounces along in a pleasingly toe-tapping style as summery three-part harmonies are sumptuously layered over a marching beat. The relentless percussion is offset by the mellifluous vocals and it’s easy to miss the uncompromisingly grim lyrics about lost children and bombs in parking lots through the cheery delivery. The chime of guitars adds further interest to a track which seems deceptively simple upon first lesson but has a subtle depth which some of their contemporaries would be only too pleased to mine.

Having lamented the state of local radio in the course of the track it’s perhaps for the best that your local commercial station are unlikely to feature World News on their playlists. You’ll need to find your own way to tune in – it’ll be worth the effort.
